CIQM Retreat: January 7-9, 2016

This is an all-hands meeting aimed to involve the whole Center - all faculty, students, and postdocs. 

At the retreat, we’ll lay out the plan for the coming year, and form research and education goals grounded on our current activities.  
    
    ~ Brainstorming sessions will allow the students and faculty to join their projects together as steps toward a higher goal.    
    ~ An evening Reception and Dinner January 7th and tours of Howard University's new Nano Building.
    ~ Fun un-structured activities will allow interactions around common interests.

Thursday January 7

9:00           Welcome and Overview - Projects for this Year - Bob Westervelt
9:30           Brainstorming – Quantum Materials by Design - Color Centers in Diamond
                  9:30            Whiteboard interactive introduction
                  9:45            "Post-it" Brainstorming Sessions on Approaches
                  10:30           Reconvene as one group to share and discuss findings. Form cohesive results.

11:00-11:15            Break

11:15          Brainstorming - New Materials / Topological Insulators
                   11:15            Whiteboard interactive introduction

                   12:15             Reconvene as one group and share findings. Form cohesive results.

1:00 - 2:00  Lunch - continue brainstorming discussions informally

2:00            Introduction to Deaf Culture and Sign Language – Paul Sabila
2:30            Introduction to Speed Data-ing – Carol Lynn Alpert
2:45            Speed Data-ing session 1
                   A fun, fast-paced activity to get to know one another. In 3 minutes, briefly introduce yourself and describe what
                   you'd like to achieve this year, and what help you need to achieve success.

5:00             Meet in Lobby for Bus-ride to Howard University
5:30             Reception at Howard University and tour of beautiful new Interdisciplinary Research Building
7:30             Meet in Lobby for Bus-ride to Dinner
8:00             Group Dinner at Zatinya Restaurant (corner of 9th and G streets) Sit with "Dates" and prepare for Friday's Research Project Meetings.

 
Friday January 8
